The Third International Conference of the Department of Musicology in Ljubljana
Music and its Referential Systems
6-7 May 2010
The entrance of music into the system of "beaux arts" meant amongst other things also a break with the paradigm of comprehending music in the context of some extra-musical systems, valid for centuries. This enabled emancipation of music from all extra-musical functions, celebrated and emphasised until lately.
The concept of musical work as the central identification point of the creative and research interest vanished together with the broadening of the borders of the artistic practices. This has brought also the doubt of exclusive value of aesthetic normativeness an artistic autonomy. How can we from our today's point of view value the mentioned historical change? Did the exchange of one reference system really mean the autonomisation of music? Did not in fact the "artistic religion", into which also the music can be found, only a paradigm more? This questioning is especially important in the relation to today's music practices, denoted by a great number of analytical procedures and hermeneutical views. Which are today the reference systems, by which music is determined, through which music gets its own sense and meaning? And which relation can be found between them?
The stated questions open a series of different thematic fields:
- Music in the concept of "beaux arts" (the religion of art, ideology of/in music, musical autonomy …)
- Traditional functional definitions of music (music in the liturgy, "folk spirit", national awareness …)
- Music between the autonomy and function today (music in film, in TV, in public spaces …)
